COPPERHILL, TN – July 19, 2026 – The City of Copperhill has been awarded a 2026 Traffic Signal Modernization Program (TSMP) Grant from the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), securing funding to modernize the traffic signals in the city.

The project includes the traffic signals located along State Route 68 (Ocoee Street) at Ferry Street and Grand Avenue, making Copperhill one of only 11 communities across Tennessee selected to receive funding through the highly competitive 2026 Traffic Signal Modernization Program (TSMP).

The TSMP helps local communities replace aging traffic signal equipment and improve traffic operations. TDOT funds 100 percent of eligible project costs, including survey, design, and construction.

“Being selected for this highly competitive grant is a tremendous investment in Copperhill and another example of what can be accomplished by aggressively pursuing outside funding opportunities,” said Mayor Greg Barker. “Our existing traffic signals date back to the early 2000s and are overdue for modernization. These upgrades will improve safety, reliability, and traffic operations while costing Copperhill taxpayers nothing. We will continue pursuing every available grant opportunity, from government agencies to corporations, foundations, and nonprofit organizations, to strengthen our infrastructure, support the continued growth, and reduce the financial burden on our residents.”

Mayor Barker also thanked the Tennessee Department of Transportation, the Southeast Tennessee Development District, and Regional Planner Rohan Thompson for their assistance throughout the application process.

TDOT will coordinate with the City of Copperhill as the project moves into the design and construction phases. Additional project details and scheduling information will be announced as they become available.
